In celebration of knowledge, Saraswati Day is devoted to Sanghyang Aji Saraswati, the Goddess of Science and the Arts and takes place on the last day of the island's Pakuwon calendar. The day before Saraswati is called Pengeradanaan which is a day to prepare both spiritually and physically and also when books are cleaned and properly arranged. On the afternoon of actual Saraswati Day, Balinese are not allowed to read or write the book because all the books and scriptures are offered for blessing in ceremony then the evening, known as Malam Sastra, people are supposed to read books (especially religious books) in their houses or in the temple. The day following Saraswati is called Banyu Pinaruh that is taken from Banyu meaning ‘water’ and Pinaruh meaning ‘wisdom,’ literally translated to mean that man must have wisdom that always flows like water. Early in the morning of Banyu Pinaruh Day, Balinese go to beaches, rivers and springs to purify themselves and pray for wisdom.
